Hmm so quite a lot has happened in the past few days. School has started, I’ve moved to a new place, err and I guess that’s about it, other than a bit of going out with friends.
First of all: Everything is freaking expensive here, but that was to be expected, but the most appalling thing is how much alcohol is here. We went to the “bottle shop” this past weekend and a 6-pack of crappy beer is at least $20 and a normal sized bottle of liquor is at least $40. WTF? The cheapest alcohol here is wine, guess I have to get accustomed to that…
Additionally: I ordered fish and chips at a bar and asked for ketchup and was told it cost $2.50. WTF
Help me I’m poor. Ok, on with life.
I felt like a little kid waiting for school to start. I was really really excited for my first day of class. Excited to meet all the cute Australians, listen to professors with funny accents, etc. I had a misconception that class would be more fun because I was in Tasmania. Fast forward to Monday, my first class, Environmental Geology, was alright. We talked about mining and I was surprised to learn how great the extent of it is here. Instead of going into oil, the geologists here go into mining. Weird.
My next class is where the excitement fully disappeared, Physics 2. BARF. Don’t be mistaken, physics is most definitely not more exciting when taught with an Australian accent. It’s just as dull as it is in the states and I already skipped class today to go throw. Sound familiar?
However, my Australian Landscape Change class is awesome. The professor is ADORABLE. He’s this bald man with a big beard and the cutest laugh. The class has been super interesting so far and we have pretty cool assignments lined up.
Additionally, I was shocked to not actually see many gorgeous Australians, in fact, I’ve seen quite a few, dare I say, ugly Australians. Where are all the Hugh Jackmans hiding? They also use awkwardly long paper here, it’s like a whole inch longer. We’ve gone out a few times with some locals and I’ve been learning even more slang. I’ll update the slang list soon, but oh man, they’re great.
So about my new place. Basically it’s a list of pros and cons. However, I decided that the cheaper rent ($35 less / week) and much better location make up for it.
This house is adorable. It’s a three story house and I’m on the top floor with another girl, Sam. The house is super clean compared to my old place and it’s in the Sandy Bay city centre so the location is perfect.
My roommates are SO AZN. Two are from Korea and two are from Malaysia, their english isn’t the best, but they’re super nice and always cook really yummy smelling food. In fact, they gave me some tonight and it was delicious. They are throwing a birthday party right now for a friend, karaoke machine and all.
So ya, I decided to trade in my mansion for a cuter smaller place in the city. I’m hoping it was the right decision, but who knows. Tune in next time on House Hunters – International. oh I miss HGTV.
when did you move into your new place? how’d you find it/was it easy to leave your old place??? i wanna visit australia now!
